Note me
As many of you know, I love my primes. Especially the fast bright ones. I even drag these around when i'm shooting landscapes...to much amusement of my photographer friends. Many turn up with 3x f4 zooms. But I turn up with 2x f2.8 zooms and 4x fast primes. My bag is heavier, bulkier and I have a more pained look on my face too....but I like to use them and I get great piccys from them.
Once, not long ago I might add, fast primes were the route to sharp and clean images. In reasonably low light, an f1.4 lens offers 3 stops brighter shooting over an f4 zoom. But it looses in versatility somewhat. Which requires more lenses and more consideration when shooting. But those 3 stops yeild an 8 fold increase in shutter speed. Or more importantly, 8 time less iso speed. This is the difference between iso 800 and iso 6400.
Once upon a time (pre-5DII) anything over iso 1250 was mostly unsable for landscape work...although some high iso art-type shots worked really well. But these days, the 5DII has changed all that. Iso 6400 is still noisy, but it's fallen into the usable bracket, certainly the IQ, sharness is there in abundance. The colour shifts and castes have gone too. With the combination of the Raw extracted per pixel noise at iso 6400 and the large 21mp canvas...an A2 print looks superb. You gain DOF, due to the f4 aperture (compared to the f1.2/f1.4 prime options) and the photographs are looking very good indeed.
So where does that leave me? Well, i keep thinking about getting a 70-200mm f4 IS L. It would be nice to thin down my bag and leave my 85IIL (very heavy), 135L and 200IIL at home and swap out just this one lens. At the standard end, i've stopped taking my 35L, 50L and 85IIL combo with me and now I just take my 24-70/2.8L. It's a big lens, but it's a lot lighter and more versatile than my three primes. At the wide end, I'm using my 16-35IIL and a 24IIL (just in case). In fact I'm shooting a lot more with my 24-70L...it's so versatile and a 24mm lens is ofter wider than i need on a full frame camera.
So do i use the same lens list for wedding? No not a chance! Primes are still the way to go IMHO. Light is everything...To have iso 6400 AND f1.2 is a modern ability and something that I'd call photographic progress. I can now shoot in lower light than ever before. To be able to shoot at iso 6400 at f1.4/1.2 and get shutter speeds of 1/250th-1/500th sec is very usefull in getting sharp photographs. Lat week i picked up my flash guns for some ebay auctions, and the batteries were dead...lol! That goes to show how little I use a flash gun! For me, I'm an available light shooter. 24IIL, 35L, 50L, 85IIL, 135L and 200IIL are my staple lenses, with 2 camera bodies and a small bag to carry 4 lenses. That's me, that's the way I shoot weddings...but your approach might lead you down a different path.
