Artist's Comments

This is another in the 5 part series of Sunrise images shot on Port Eynon Beach in September 2005. I used a Lee 0.9 ND Graduated Filter to hold back the bright sky and balance the foreground. Here the sun had cast a glorious Golden Caramel colour over the bay and the low Sun angle caused interesting shadows. I image was taken using my Canon 20D and a Sigma 12-24mm lens. I am speachless at the sharpness of this Sigma lens, there was a little flare in this shot, but easily cleaened up in Photoshop.
I decided to place this image in the Landscape and not the SeaScape category because; although the image contains the sea and several interesting puddles, I felt that the primary attention here was on the beach and the shadows cast over the Wormcasts.
This is one of my most tresured images, I hope that it brings as much enjoyment to you as it does to me!

Yes, that's what I saw when I took the photo. I was really trying hard to maximise the water's reflections and I needed a quite low viewing point to get it. I also love the shadows caused behind the work casts.

Fantastic shot, love the silk look of the sand

As for the 12-24mm it has a problem with ghosting and lense flares, especially shooting into the sun, otherwise it's an amazing lense

Landscape photography, like pornography, attempts to seduce the beholder by presenting an image divorced from its actual physical context

Thank you. Of all the shots that I took last year, it's the one that I find the most dramatic and the one that I can spend ages looking at. I have an A3 copy on my wall that is still very very sharp.
Ever since I started cleaning the front element with a silk cloth flare seems to have really reduced on this lens. It's a cloth that came free with an EIZO monitor that I used to own, I think that they sell it with some fluid too which I dont use. Flare still occurs some times, but it's greatly reduced than it used to be but flare and ghosting are a fact of life with any wide agle lens when pointing into the sun.
