Artist's Comments

I was out and about shooting for a Housing brochure in Swindon and I saw this shot begging to be taken. It's an amazingly wide angle of view but the Sigma 12-24mm lens always keeps the straights level. There's no photoshop correction here, this image is straight out of the camera.
I think it was the shapes that drew me to this shot.

Canon 5D, Sigma 12-24mm lens @ 12mm. Iso 200, 1/250th sec f8

Is this a wide-angle? The lines are so straight!

that fact is what sealed my decision to get this lens. Even at 12mm, straight lines remain straight. It's truly impressive.

Thank you. It's a modern wonder, but in reality it's an f8 lens. It's performance at any larger aperture is really awfull, but stop it down and it's great.

There's alot of bad copies about so my advise it not to buy mail order but go to a large shop that stocks a lot of them and cherry pick. Remember that this lens MUST be stopped down, they all vigenette and are soft from f3.5-f8. The best copies sharpen up nicely around f8 and peak about f11. Some say that this should really be considered to be an f11 lens and that's probably true for interior shots. but for well and evenly lit out doors shot's it's fine. Fitting front filters is a royal pain too.

I guess we can't expect the world from a single lens. And, at 12mm, is handshake or motion blur really a problem in low light? I mean, it'd have to be pretty severe to show in the photo.

Wow... there's no distortion? How do they manage that?
