Wide Lens Decisions

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 18, 2008, 1:20 PM
Just recently I broke my Tamron 17-35mm lens. I don't really want to go into what happened but surfice it to say that I need to think about a replacement.
I originally bought the Tamron as a cheap stop gap to a more exotic lens and it's been a fine performer. The f2.8 ability at the wide end has been very welcome (although painfull soft in the corners at this aperture). Since fitting an Ee-s focus screen to my 5D, I've found that f4 lenses are quite dark in the viewfinder.
So my options as I see it are 3 fold.
1) go and get another Tamron 17-35mm f2.8-4...it's put in 4 years good service but it's not dust sealed and mine had a lot of annoying dust inside. It's cheap and light but not with out it's issues. It's sharp stopped down but it distorts quite heavily.
2) Go for a Canon 17-40mm f4 L. It's a stunning lens, sharp enough wide open, but only f4. I can expect my 5D viewfinder to be quite dim which is a major factor against it (for me). It's AF is excellent, but on a wide lens this isn't a deal breaker. It's a pro build and it is dust and moisture sealed too....which is very tempting for my landscape work. A red ring of confidence is very appealing too. But it's that f4 that's concearning me.
3) a 16-35mm f2.8 L II...now this IS a very serious lens. It's big and expensive and it's about the best there is on the Canon mount. That said...it's far from perfect. But it is optically superior to every other lens in this list. There is nothing that the Tamron can offer (except price and weight) that this lens exceeds. But it's price is not insignificant.
With the demise of my Tamron, my hand is forced to make a decision to my next lens choice. I was thinking of either a 50L or a 24L but it looks like I will need to buy a wide zoom instead!

Regards,

Gareth Cooper

That's a tricky one...it's recently had a warm over and to date I haven't seen a single review of this new lens. Optically, it's a newer design, plus it gains HSM. But it's a heavier build than the Tamron and the older design was optically weaker than the Tamron. So I'm really not sure. I'd like to try one but I'm really not sure of it.

Contax N 17-35/2.8 converted to EOS.

or Nikkor AF-S 17-35/2.8 with adapter to Canon EOS if you are willing to accept superior optical quality and MF.

I'd vote for the 24mm f/1.4L USM. I know it's 7mm longer than the wide end of those zooms, but I think it'd cure a lot of the issues you see. The viewfinder would be brilliant, it's not gonna have the weight or bulk of a zoom, it's SHARP and will have better corners and vignetting, and it's a happy medium in the middle of the zoom ranges. And, since it was on your list to begin with, I'd give it a go and see if it can suit your wide needs well enough for you.

I love my 17-40 L. Its really fast and sharp. I use it as my main lens at the moment. I do wish it was f2.8 or something, but for most things a minimum of f4 is plentiful.
I'm currently still on the 350D, but when I move on to the 5D soon I'll really appreciate the full wide angle.
It was the cheapest L glass I could afford, and well worth the money.

Well, I have the Sigma 17-35mm on my wish list for my birthday... at $220 right now on Amazon, my husband may just get it for me.

My problem is that I'm trying to juggle 2 photographic disciplines with a limited budget. My wedding photography would be best served with a 24L, but my landscapes would be better served with a 16-35L. Hmmm
